Signs of a Gas Leak on Your Property
January 22, 2013
Every property owner who has natural gas needs to know how to spot a gas leak quickly to prevent a potentially life-threatening emergency. The problem with natural gas is that it can be very difficult to detect a gas leak before it becomes dangerous. Some people can smell it right away while others hardly notice it until it’s too late. Tap-Roots Plumbing & Heating’s leak detection team is professionally trained, so we know how to find and fix gas leaks quickly.
As a homeowner, your job is to watch for common warning signs and call professional help when you think you have a problem. Be aware of the following:
- Gas or rotten egg smell. Since gas is naturally odorless, gas companies usually use additives to make leaks easier to detect. In most cases, the additive smells like rotten eggs. The point is to make a strong odor that everyone can smell almost immediately.
- Hissing sound. If there is a leak in one of your gas appliances, you might hear a loud hissing sound as the gas is escaping.
- Nausea and dizziness. If you suddenly feel nauseous or dizzy for seemingly no reason, you might be breathing in excessive amounts of natural gas. You might also experience a persistent headache, irregular breathing, or extreme fatigue.
- Bubbling. Natural gas leaks can cause visible bubbles in moist areas.
If you experience any of the above signs of a gas leak, leave your home and get fresh air. Don’t use anything that can cause an explosion, including electrical appliances, telephones, light switches, or matches. Anything that can create a tiny spark can cause a life-threatening explosion if your home contains a high concentration of natural gas. Small leaks are generally harmless, but you should still call for help as soon as possible to avoid gas accumulation over time.
