Gas Leak Detection Can Save Your Home

September 16, 2013

A gas leak is a serious problem that needs immediate attention. Leaking gases from HVAC plumbing or other lines can lead to unintentional fire, carbon monoxide poisoning and can even be fatal. Unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to detect gas leaks in your home, and Tap-Roots can help.

Use Your Senses

Usually a gas leak will manifest itself in a subtle way that you can detect with your own senses. Here are some things to look, smell, and listen for that will prompt you to get more in-depth evaluation:

  • Pipelines that have been exposed after a natural disaster or other catastrophic event etc.
  • Dead/dying plants in places that would otherwise be fertile
  • Damage to a connection between a gas appliance
  • Unusual sounds of hissing, roaring, or whistling near a gas line or a gas appliance
  • Unusual smell, such as the odor additive in natural gas

What to Do If You Detect a Leak

If you detect any of these signs of a gas leak, evacuate the area immediately. Do not use electrical or electronic devices, which could generate a spark. Do not light a match. As soon as you are evacuated, call your local gas company, which can dispatch qualified technicians to get the problem under control.
