3 Common Causes for Plumbing Repair and How to Avoid Them

1. Clogged Toilets and Sinks
Typically, it isn’t a matter of if your pipes will clog, it is a matter of when. Richmond, BC plumbers will tell you that a stuffed-up pipe is one of the most common issues homeowners have. Keep your pipes clear by:
- Flushing toilet paper – and only toilet paper
- Avoid pouring cooking oil down your sink
- Regularly flush your kitchen sink with boiling water to free up clogs
- Use a strainer over your shower drain to trap hair and debris
2. Broken Garbage Disposal
Another common plumbing repair involves garbage disposals, which suffer a lot of abuse at the hands of negligent homeowners. Keep fatty meats, stringy vegetables and eggshells out of your drain. You can grind a cup of ice cubes from time to time to help clear out your disposal.
3. Flooding Washing Machine
If your washing machine’s hose bursts, you will have a flood on your hands. This can happen when a rubber hose dries out, which is why we recommend replacing rubber pieces with a steel model instead. You should also have your machine sitting on an overflow tray.
